roots to sky
a night upended
the wind a
sweeping hand
careless fingers twist and wring
trees into splinters

Sky sheds fruits –
splatterings of hail
loops of rain
tight gray wind
knifing through your too-thin coat –
Winter seeds take root.

Face looks right
Eyes look left. You sigh
just below
my hearing
but I see your shoulders fall.
The news is not good.
