On Standby

From And Don’t Come Back, published in 2021.

On Standby

The chartreuse bird
owns the sky
blotting out the sun
in the little summer
during which
I couldn’t say how many
people look at it. Anxious.
Anything more modern
than existential terror
anything more necessary
who can imagine it

so
it makes me confused
that I hope
alone of all the people I know
the bird
will speak to us
and I am not afraid
to listen.

  1. This feels like a dream where you know and don’t know what’s going on. There’s a magical realism feel. I really like it, and I hope the bird speaks, too.

    • Thank you. Somehow I feel confident it will. I’ve always felt that mythological explanations fit the way I see the universe. I’m waiting for signs and messages. And I’ve also always thought birds know things. I’m hoping maybe to be a bird in a future life if things go that way.
