If you are driving down the highway
in a pickup
carrying a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric
in the back of your truck

the back of your truck empty
what do you think has happened?
iii.
A Person on the Road Certain that Everything is Fine
If you are driving down the highway
and you see
a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric

lying on the side of the road
what do you think has happened?

If you have a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric
needing to get from Point A to Point B

Absolutely love it! Proof, if it were needed, that are is everywhere! Happy Christmas to you and yours, Claudia.
Thank you. You know, eventually everything on earth goes through transitions, and the road has a lot of forks along the way. For some reason discarded furniture has always seemed sad to me – I guess that it is finished with its life – and to end up on the highway shoulder, oh dear, I hope that is not my fate!
I love the way this circles around. Yes, look before you leap! But of course most of us will jump anyway… ( k)
Yes. And in the end who is affected? The poor brown sofa! You do wonder what it did to end up roadside. And making decisions, well, we certainly don’t know what the consequences will be.
No, and most times we don’t even consider them.
I love the saga of this sofa and the way its presence or absence appears in the thoughts of the various characters and their scenarios. I also like the structure of the poem so that all is explained at the conclusion. I often find myself wondering about the story behind certain items on the side of the road.
I am fascinated by roadside lost items. Always have been, and always have made up stories in my mind as to what brought them there. I could go on and on about the brown sofa, I think, as a stand in for all the sofas, boxes, chairs, etc. beside the road.
I love this saga of the sofa–and I wonder what happened? 😀
Well, as to the actual sofa, which I saw on Rte 309, no idea, except I remember it disappeared…aliens took it? But you know, I think this topic is fascinating, all the paths an item takes through its life (like, what happened to my mothers cat-destroyed sofa when it didn’t sell at her estate sale? Just saying!)
I think some of my mom’s stuff ended up in a dump, but who knows?
After the estate sale, the rest was taken away by the house clearing people, and where it went we don’t know, and we didn’t care. If it evaded the dump, that would surprise me. Although the cat-shredded sofa could have made a break for it, jumped off the truck, and even now 2 years later is roadside in a ditch…I would not be surprised. That sofa knew its own mind all right.
I hope that sofa did make a run for it! 🤣
I wouldn’t be surprised if by now it hasn’t found some pillows, an armchair, and a rug, and the whole gang is holed up somewhere under an underpass.
Oh. . .the underpass gang! Yes, I’ve heard of them. They lull you into sitting. . .and then. . .well, it’s only whispered about.
Yes, and for good reason. Not everyone can handle that kind of thing. !
