Sofa in Three Acts Plus Epilogue

Sofa in Three Acts Plus Epilogue

i.
Any Old Person on the Road

If you are driving down the highway
and you see
a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric
on its back
by the side of the road
left end crushed and frame exposed
what do you think has happened?

ii.
A Person on the Road for a Specific Reason

If you are driving down the highway
in a pickup
carrying a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric
in the back of your truck
and you arrive at your destination
the back of your truck empty
what do you think has happened?

iii.
A Person on the Road Certain that Everything is Fine

If you are driving down the highway
and you see
a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric
just like the one you gave to your aunt
lying on the side of the road
what do you think has happened?

iv.
A Person Who Has a Decision to Make

If you have a sofa
upholstered in brown velour fabric
needing to get from Point A to Point B
think twice. Maybe your cousin
is not the individual to transport it
after all?

    • Thank you. You know, eventually everything on earth goes through transitions, and the road has a lot of forks along the way. For some reason discarded furniture has always seemed sad to me – I guess that it is finished with its life – and to end up on the highway shoulder, oh dear, I hope that is not my fate!

  1. I love the saga of this sofa and the way its presence or absence appears in the thoughts of the various characters and their scenarios. I also like the structure of the poem so that all is explained at the conclusion. I often find myself wondering about the story behind certain items on the side of the road.

    • I am fascinated by roadside lost items. Always have been, and always have made up stories in my mind as to what brought them there. I could go on and on about the brown sofa, I think, as a stand in for all the sofas, boxes, chairs, etc. beside the road.
