These days
acorns
fat, solid acorns
find themselves crunched under my feet
more often than I would have thought
this still being summer
but I guess that
now is the time to prepare for
winter
if I can say that word or
even think it
on such a hot, sunny day
I do know
I am hearing the acorns say it.

Bur oak acorns, 2017.
The acorns have not yet started to drop out of my oak tree but my neighbour’s tree is almost devoid of leaves already. We are definitely on the cusp of a season.
I’ve been crunching acorns in the park and I see walnuts coming down too…fall is just getting started, I am happy about that!
Yes, the black walnuts are everywhere on the ground. I love that citrus smell that comes off them. I have seen other acorns down too but my oak seems to be clinging on for a bit longer.
Thousand Oaks, where I live, the oaks are beginning to shed their acorns too. I love the little acorn caps.
Ever since I was little I have thought acorns were perfection. Love their shape and the varieties they come in, big, small, shiny, and even some with a hairy look.
